Annual well-woman exam

Annual well-woman exam in Miami.

Cervical screening, breast examination, and the conversation that usually gets cut short.

What is involved

How this works here

  • Cervical screening to current interval guidance, which for most people is not annual.
  • Clinical breast examination and referral for mammography where it is due.
  • Blood pressure, weight and a cardiovascular risk conversation, because this is often the only visit of the year.
  • Bone density referral where age or risk factors indicate it.
  • Time for the thing you were going to mention at the end.

What the visit covers

Forty-five minutes, used properly

Cervical screening to current interval guidance

For most people that is every three to five years, not annually.

Clinical breast examination

And a referral for mammography when it is due.

Blood pressure

Weight and a cardiovascular risk conversation, since this is often the only medical visit of the year.

Contraception reviewed

What you are using, whether it still fits your life.

Cycle

Mood, sleep and libido, asked about rather than waited on.

Bone density referral where age

Family history or medication indicates it.

Vaccination status

Including HPV where you are still eligible.

Screening intervals

So you know what is actually due

  • Cervical cytology every three years from twenty-one to twenty-nine.
  • Cytology with HPV co-testing every five years from thirty to sixty-five, or cytology alone every three.
  • Screening can usually stop at sixty-five with an adequate negative history.
  • Mammography from forty, annually or biennially depending on risk and on your own preference after a proper conversation.
  • More frequent does not mean safer. Over-screening produces false positives and procedures that were never needed.

Annual well-woman exam: common questions

Do I need a smear every year?
Usually not. Current guidance is every three to five years for most people depending on age and test type, and we follow it rather than over-screening.
Is the visit worth it if I do not need screening?
Often yes — it is where contraception, cycle problems, menopause symptoms and cardiovascular risk get picked up.
Do I still need an annual visit if I do not need a smear?
Most people benefit from one. It is where contraception, cycle problems, perimenopause and cardiovascular risk get picked up, none of which are on a screening schedule.
Can I bring a list?
Please do. The thing people mention with a hand on the door handle is very often the actual reason they came.
Do I need a pelvic exam every year?
Not routinely, for most people without symptoms. It is a conversation, not an obligation.
